Asda’s fourth quarter sales drop – Retail Week
Asda has suffered its tenth consecutive quarter of falling sales, but bosses hailed “early signs of improvement” as the rate of decline slowed. sales dropped 2.9% in the fourth quarter ending January 27, compared to a 5.8% slump during the comparable period a year ago. Asda said shopper numbers slipped 1.8% during the period, while the average basket size decreased 1.1%. Operating profit also declined, although Walmart did not break out a profit figure for its UK business. Asda is focusing its efforts on simplifying its offer, improving availability and investing in price.
Bud Light to launch over the weekend – The Drinks Business
Bud Light will be officially launching in the UK over the weekend. According to AB InBev Marketing Director for the UK and Ireland Nick Robinson, the launch will “inject energy and excitement into the UK beer category,”. He also said that it will be “the biggest ever brand launch by AB InBev UK”. From tomorrow the product will be available in 440ml aluminium cans in-store and 500ml SKUs for wholesalers. It will also be offered on draught across the nation’s pubs, bars and restaurants from the first week of March. The launch will be supported by a multi-million-pound marketing campaign to include TV advertising, “high-impact out-of-home sites at some of the most iconic locations nationwide”, along with “significant print and digital spend, plus extensive PR and social media activations”.
